Logan Lucky – Bad Luck? – Release Date August 18th

Logan Lucky - Bad Luck? -

Release Date August 18th

Logan Lucky is the latest release by Bleecker Street, and it is set to hit theaters on August 18th, 2017.  Bleecker Street has been around since about 2015, and had about 14 releases, including 'Trumbo', and most recently, 'The Lost City of Z'.

Although 'The Lost City of Z' wasn't a complete bust, Bleecker Street will need a better performance from Logan Lucky.

The good news is, the movie is getting great pre-release reviews.  With a cast that includes, Channing Tatum, Adam Driver, Seth McFarlane, Riley Keough, and Katie Holmes, just to name a few, they have pulled out all the stops to put the star power into this movie to make it a mainstream hit.

Their one setback might be, although they have the star power to make it a mainstream hit, the plot being set around the Coca-Cola 600, a NASCAR race, may have some viewers a little leary of tuning in.

The official Synopsis is as follows:

Trying to reverse a family curse, brothers Jimmy (Channing Tatum) and Clyde Logan (Adam Driver) set out to execute an elaborate robbery during the legendary Coca-Cola 600 race at the Charlotte Motor Speedway. The production shot at Charlotte Motor Speedway during the actual NASCAR Coca-Cola 600 and the Bank of America 500, as well as at Atlanta Motor Speedway. In a fun twist, six NASCAR stars pop up in non-driver cameo roles in the film.

After watching the trailer, this looks to be a hilarious movie, that looks to be well worth watching.  I just don't know that audiences are going to flock to the theaters to do it.

I don't know that even Channing can turn around the luck of the Logan family or Bleecker Street.

A Total Solar Eclipse of the Heart … err, Sun 8/21/17!

A Total Solar Eclipse of the Heart … err, Sun 8/21/17!

Well, maybe you’re not old enough to remember Bonnie Tyler and her chart smashing single, Total Eclipse of the Heart, but you will have a chance to tell stories of this Total Solar Eclipse of the Sun if you plan right and you are ready.

On August 21st the skies will change, and the moon will blot out the light from the sun.  Now this isn’t necessarily super rare, but for us here in the US, this should be a real good view of a total solar eclipse.

The best viewing will be about a 70 mile arc from South Carolina to Oregon.  If you are from my current state, Colorado, the best view will be had a few hours north in Casper.  If you are in that path of total eclipse, you will get the best results, and an experience you wont soon forget!

During this eclipse, the moon should hide the sun, and you should only be able to see the exterior atmosphere of the sun, or the corona, to be more scientific!  You also will actually see darkness approach you as the occurrence progresses through its sequence.

The complete eclipse could, should last about 2 minutes and 40 seconds, so you should have time to get some good pictures.  Now, the further you are outside the optimal path, the less time you will have for this total eclipse, even down to just a couple of seconds, so if you're outside the path, arrive early, and be ready!

Here is a time chart.

Here is a graph of the arc.

Now, obviously you don’t want to go staring at the sun without some special equipment, so pick up a pair of solar viewing glasses.

Be safe, have fun, and make a trip of it.  It’s going to be Awesome!

Movie Rental Review – King Arthur: Legend of the Sword

King Arthur: Legend of the Sword
PG-13

The sword being Excalibur. Spoiler alert! Apparently Arthur didn't always have Excalibur.

There are many installments to the story of King Arthur and his amazing sword. It's been awhile since anyone has revisited this deep, twisting tale. In 2004 an adaptation introduces us to Guinevere. I recommend Excalibur from 1981, but don't expect that story to be retold here.

This version of Camelot takes us to the meager beginnings of Arthur. Arthur. Don't expect any other characters you're used to when thinking of King Arthur. That was okay though, Charlie Hunnam is easy to look at. Problem is that this movie is not for the true Arthurian fan. Where the list of characters we're used to lacks, there are some that fill the void with familiarity and humor.
I am disappointed in not seeing Merlin or Morgana (Although, I believe the 'Mage' is suspect. ), but Bedivere is among our friends here.

Guy Ritchie wrote and directed Legend of the Sword and it is entertaining. You might get lost a few times in this epic length event, but you always find your way back to the Lady in the Lake...

The movie is long but goes fast. Full of swashbuckling adventure, funny English quips, and roguish good looks.

My take? It's not the best movie told about King Arthur or the Sword in the Stone, but it is a fantastic summer buy/rental before going back to school!

Leadership – Christian Blog

Leadership

A Christian Blog

Being a leader, or the act of leadership really is an interesting topic.  What does leadership mean, the Oxford dictionary would simply tell you it is the act of leading.  Well, that is not real helpful.  Ok, then maybe we dig a little deeper, down to the root of the word, how about lead, what does lead, mean.  Back to the Oxford dictionary I went, and it meant ‘be in charge of or command of’.

To be honest, none of that gave me a lot of spark to write much of a biblical study on leadership.  Who chooses a leader, why do some have good leadership skills, and others don’t.

Leadership is one of the few things in life that you can be good at and still those that stand with you do not receive.

Jesus for example, the perfect leader, He had one man betray Him, and another deny Him in His finest hour.  All of the training that the disciples went through from a perfect leader, and yet two followers still failed.

Leadership, is something that you can be perfect at, and still have failing results, and I believe it is because leadership relies so heavily on followers.  There is no leader without followers, the very definition states that you are leading something.

The seed of leadership is first planted in being a good follower.  Leading and following, they are fruit of the same tree.

In the NKJV if you type leader in, it appears 67 times, with 65 times being God telling the people to appoint a leader, 1 time referring to one of those leader, and 1 time, God saying He has picked the leader, and this is how I know that Jesus is the perfect leader.

In Isaiah 55 and verse 4, [Isa 55:4 KJV] 4 Behold, I have given him [for] a witness to the people, a leader and commander to the people.

The heart of a man may see a leader as a powerful specimen, from a lineage of great leaders, their leadership skills honed in classes and through the years of watching the king or leader before them.

But the only perfect leader we have record of was born amidst controversy, He was delivered in a manger because there was no place to stay, or at least no place they were allowed to stay.  His earthly father worked hard as a carpenter, and beyond the word of God had no formal training in leadership, and yet, Jesus, was the perfect leader that God spoke of that He would send.

So, surly God could have just made Jesus a perfect leader, but that would have been cheating, so we know God did no such thing.  Jesus would have to become a great leader on His own, or at least in a fashion that could be replicated by the body of Christ.

So naturally, the first step, the most important step to leadership, as I said before, starts with being a follower, a follower to God, and that only happens when we accept Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior.

In 1st Corinthians 12, we see Paul talk about the gifts of the Spirit, and in verses 27 and 28 from the NLT it reads like this, [1Co 12:27-28 NLT] 27 All of you together are Christ's body, and each of you is a part of it. 28 Here are some of the parts God has appointed for the church: first are apostles, second are prophets, third are teachers, then those who do miracles, those who have the gift of healing, those who can help others, those who have the gift of leadership, those who speak in unknown languages.

Leadership, comes from the spirit of the man.  Great biblical leadership inside the church comes from the Spirit, and it should be the Spirit of God that lives inside of Him.

Growing up in Texas, we loved our football, and it seemed that the team success was based on the ability and quality of the leadership of our team.  I always thought, what makes him such a good leader, I couldn’t trace it to anything, but now I know, it was his spirit, I always called that the, ‘it factor’, some people had it, and others didn’t.  But, something I could see in every great leader, is that the drive and determination they had surpassed all others.  They were the first ones to practice, and the last to leave.  They would motivate and encourage those around them, inevitably, they had a sense of love for all, and they garnered a loyalty from their followers that could not be broken.

Now those qualities, can be earthly and help you have success on the football field, or they can be spiritual, coming from the Spirit of Christ who lives within us, and through that, can bring Glory to God.

Jesus showed us these things, He followed God at all costs.  Much of that ‘it’ factor lies within that supreme ability to follow, and the willingness to give all for what you believe in.  The quarterback on the football team was willing to give all for that victory.  Come in, stay late, work with others, study.

Jesus was willing to give all, He gave His time, He gave His kindness, He gave His patience, He gave His love, and most importantly He gave His life.

Leadership bleeds down every level, even the followers are leaders to those that look to them.  There really is no break from leadership, especially in the body of Christ.  Someone is always looking, and therefore you have a moment to sway their life, and your leadership can guide them either into a place of darkness, or into a place where they too, are bringing Glory to God.

Leadership is not easily explained, or attained.  When you look at doing something, always look at perfection.  Jesus was a perfect leader, God appointed Jesus as our leader.  So therefore, to have good leadership characteristics, it is best to study Jesus, and we could read plenty of verses about how Jesus was patient with those around Him, Jesus was always in control of Himself, Jesus was gentle, Jesus lived in a light of great joy, He was kind and faithful, He was peaceful, and of course He had an unsurpassing love for everyone.  He wasn’t leader to just a few, He was leader to all, that He might bring them into a relationship with Him.

You want to be a great leader, then first be a great follower of Christ, and do those things, and as your relationship with Him grows, you will find that leadership inherently grows with it.

What is Love? – Christian Blog

What is Love?

A Christian Blog

How do you not start out with it, “What is love”.

In a study like this we really could go a million directions, we could go Hebrew, we could go Greek, we could just stick with English.  Who is the authority, who says, what love is.

In John 15:13, Jesus says, [Jhn 15:13 NKJV] 13 "Greater love has no one than this, than to lay down one's life for his friends.

The verse is plain and simple, there are no hidden meanings in the Greek, it simply means exactly what it says.

The statement echos in depth the path that Jesus, Himself, took to show His love for us, and in turn, should exemplify the love that we claim we have for others.

We say we love, but our actions tend to show a life lived for our selfish desires.

Like I said earlier, there really isn’t any hidden meaning, to lay down your life is simply that.  To lay your life aside for the life of another.

It is only a person reborn, that could do such a thing.  It is only a heart of Jesus that could carry out such an act, and He proved the fact that it could be done, and then through being born again in the Spirit, that very power then resides in us.

It is a command of God.  Just a few verses down, Jesus says in verse 17, [Jhn 15:17 NKJV] 17 "These things I command you, that you love one another.

All around these verses, Jesus explains that the only way to do such a thing is to abide in Him, and to remain in Him, to have relationship with God, through Him.

Jesus asked of us to love, and He did not ask without first, not only showing us, but also giving us and telling us by what power He was able to do that which He was commanding us to do.

The convicting nature of such statements and actions brought me to a moment of trying to see what that might look like.  Do I sacrifice everything, to help my brothers?  Do I sacrifice my “alone time” or my “me time” to help and fellowship with others?  Do I relax?  How can I just neglect myself, and just help others, whether they ask or not?  If there is a need, I fill it?

I contemplated all of that, and so much more.

I don’t have the perfect answer, but Paul gives us clues to the answer.  In 1st Cor. 13:4, Paul writes the words that we read all the time, but what do they really say to us.

Love suffers long, love doesn’t quit, it doesn’t lose heart, it will go to the ends.  Jesus never quit on us, He loved us through it all, and even in the midst of such, He forgave the very ones that betray and killed Him.

Love is kind, a word so basic it is the base word.  Be kind, the word itself is only used once and is used with love, implying that it is the very act of love.  The act of kindness is love.

Love doesn’t envy nor is it boastful.  The love of a man is often revealed in his character.  The basic character is to think of others and not yourself.  It is part of the very definition that we revealed earlier.  It is laying down your life for another.  A life given over to his brother would not be envious, angry or prideful against his brother.

Love is easily identified.  The heart of the man revealed in his actions.  Is he an selfless or self filled?

Love is always patient, it takes time, it easily acts in love and understands how to act in the face of adversity.

Love shows no evil, none, no evil.  Love it is the opposite of evil. It does not even consider unrighteousness, but yet rejoices and adheres to the truth.

Love will take on whatever is required, it will believe whatever is required, it will hope till the end, and it will endure until that end.

The definition of love, the explanation of love, it may still leave us somewhat confused.

What is Love, Baby, it won’t hurt you, it won’t hurt you.

What I can say, looking at the only perfect life, Jesus faithful gave everything He had, and in the end, He truly gave all mankind their only need when He selflessly laid down His life, just as He had said, for ours, for His brother.

In the end, it is you that will have to decide what that looks like in your life.  But do not build a tale that excuses you from what the Bible says.  Consult the words and commands of Jesus Himself, and weigh yourself.

Study, pray, and build yourself in the Lord so that you may not be found wanting.

Thank you for reading, and if you have any questions about God, Jesus, or Salvation, please do not hesitate to leave a comment.

Beautiful Disaster – a journey of love

Beautiful Disaster -

a journey of love

My favorite thing about myself is that I’m emotional. There is a fire within me that cannot be beaten or broken. I will always care too much, and I always invest too much love and energy into people and things that destroy me; but there is something so beautiful to that. I am so drawn to destructive people; people that are empty and searching, maybe because not long ago that’s who I was. I have this sick idea in my head that I can lead others to love themselves and that I can prove to people they have the worth that I can see in them. The only problem with this predicament is that I invest my own worth into them; I allow them to dictate what my value as a person is based on what they perceive it to be.

I believed that there was love in him deep down, and that I could expose it. I believed that the poisonous words that left his mouth, as the liquor entered were true. I believed he could find value and worth in me, but the truth is he was stuck on the road to misery. I sacrificed my moral compass to play his games and explore his mind. He never saw anything but company in me; I was nothing but a temporary distraction. When you invest time and energy into another human being, you will never get it back. We are destructive, manipulative, and selfish beings and we have to let that resonate when we’re making decisions to invest in other people.
I’ve been told that “The mark of humility is how you value others” and I think that’s true; but we can’t let the way others mistreat us determine our value, and our self worth. When someone is truly hurting they are going to destroy people around them, even the ones that claim to care about. “Hurting people, hurt people.” One of the hardest things to do is watch someone you care about hate their reflection. I remember waking up every day hating my reflection yet still searching for someone else to love it. As cliche as it is, you can never find that with someone until you make the decision to love yourself. You have GOT to love yourself more or you will never receive the love that someone out there is waiting to give you. Don’t ever conceal the messy parts of you just to please another person; you have got to grasp all those different elements that make you who you are and learn to love them.
There will always be parts of me that are messy, and unattainable, but I like that, I like the challenge, I like the growth, and i like the reality. Can you say the same?

Love, Sometimes, it’s Messy and Dark …

Love, Sometimes, it's Messy and Dark ...

He says i’m over reacting, but the reality is he made his choice. He caught countless tears on his chest of mine, about this situation, yet he still chose. I made him promise, he chose. I gave him another chance to change his mind, yet he still chose. He has other loyalties, and that is just fine but as for me, I need more. I need someone that will not fail me where I am most vulnerable, trust. He wasn’t the first, he won’t be the last and he wasn’t the worst, but he still chose. Love is a choice, so when you really love someone who do you choose? It seems so obvious to me, but then again most of the world doesn’t understand me, nor my logic, clearly neither does he.

It feels like the deepest parts of my heart have been penetrated by darkness. I want to destroy everything that was built, and I don’t even care, which is what scares me. This is who I am. I’m messy, I’m dark, I hurt people, I’m poisonous, I’m destructive and the reality is, it’s a cycle, and I will do it again.

What’s the best for – Summer Ankle Biters?

Summer Ankle Biters

I’m not talking about chihuahuas, I’m talking about mosquitoes!

Everybody hates them and we’re always finding some kind of creams, gels, and sprays to keep them away.

Candles? Please… If you’re not drenched in citronella and on fire with your hair as the wick, they don’t tend to work as advertised.

So, what does work?  We read the labels and try to figure out what DEET is and just what exactly are the “other active ingredients” these labels mention.

With kids, toddlers, and MY sensitive skin, I just can’t spray on anything and feel safe from biters OR the chemicals.

Here’s some examples:

Cutter® Sport Insect Repellent (Aerosol) includes DEET

OFF!® FamilyCare Insect Repellent I also includes DEET

Some people have an issue with DEET as it stinks to high heaven and some people are allergic, not to mention dangerous side effects that many people link to the use of DEET!  So what is a safe alternative?

Remember that old lady that used to come see your Mom every few weeks and they’d sit in the kitchen forever pouring over a little catalog?  Yeah, that’s right.
THE AVON LADY!

Avon has come out with some biter repellent!  I’m serious.  There is the old stand-by,
Skin So Soft Original

But check out the new sprays! – Picaridin is an alternative to stinky DEET and smells pretty good.
DEET FREE Skin So Soft Bug Guard Plus Picaridin Aerosol Spray

If you want a little SPF to go with your bug free fun, try
DEET FREE Skin So Soft Bug Guard Plus IR3535® Expedition™ SPF 30 Pump Spray

BENEFITS of these sprays:
• Provides effective protection against gnats, mosquitoes, deer ticks, no-seeums, sand flies, and biting midges
• Repels mosquitoes that may transmit West Nile Virus
• Repels deer ticks that may transmit Lyme Disease
• DEET-free
• Hypoallergenic
• Dermatologist tested

Another benefit, it is gear and clothing safe.

For more information on Picaridin vs. DEET click here.
